Grant Program Pumps Funds Into Local Activities
The Blueberry Jubilee Grant Program was started in 1991
by Mrs. Jerry Burge, a prominent Poplarville Businesswoman. As
Jubilee Chairman Mrs. Burge worked diligently to conceive and establish
the program as a Perpetual source of funding for local education,
service and civic organizations. She overcame many obstacles in
her fight to make this program a reality and since it's inception over
thirteen years ago, the Blueberry Jubilee Grant Program has awarded over
$86,000 to local organizations including police, fire departments, and
schools.
The grant program has grown from five grants in 1992
totaling $1300 to an average of twelve grants each year totaling over
$5000. Grant amounts vary depending on the organization's need but
the maximum grant awarded is usually $500.
Proposals for grants are submitted to the Blueberry
Jubilee Council during a designated time period. The proposals are
viewed and judged for merit by the Blueberry Jubilee Grant Committee.
To be awarded a grant the organization must meet certain established
criteria and demonstrate how the organization has and will promote the
Blueberry Industry and the Blueberry Jubilee.
Shirley Wiltshire, former county home economist and
Blueberry Council Secretary, said the program has physically benefited
many areas throughout the county and has enhanced the growth of learning
both inside and outside the classroom.
Grant recipients from 2003 characterize the types of
organizations that are helping Pearl River County to flourish.
These organizations include local Fire Departments, Poplarville
Storytelling Guild, Chamber of Commerce, Department of Human Services,
Pearl River Community College, and 4-H Clubs. Grants were also
awarded to the local school organizations including the High School
Tennis Team, PHS Chorus, and the Poplarville Athletic Association.
Mark Bridgers, Chairman of the Blueberry Jubilee
Council, said that while the influx of visitors on Jubilee day causes
some inconvenience to local businesses and residents, the year round
economic impact of the Blueberry Jubilee and the grant program far
outweighs these inconveniences.
Funding
for grants comes from money generated by the Blueberry Jubilee.
This year's grant awards will be presented about 12:00 noon on the stage
at the Jubilee entertainment area.
